Your 7 Days Around Bulgaria UNESCO monuments

Day 1

On your first day we will pick you up from the airport and depending on your arrival time we will give you the opportunity to learn the main Sofia attractions during a 4 hour Sofia walk around the city center. You will visit St. Alexander Nevski church, St. Sofia church and its catacombs, National Theater, rotunda St. George, Roman ruins and modern city center. You will check-in into your centrally located in Sofia hotel or apartment and if you wish you can go to a traditional dinner night.

Day 2:

On your second day you will be picked up around 9:00 for your Rila Monastery and Boyana church shuttle tour where you may have the chance to meet some other travelers (small groups up to 8 persons maximum) and you will visit your first 2 UNESCO sights in Bulgaria. For lunch you will enjoy some grilled trout fish, home made sausage or traditional shopska salad. You will be taken back to your accommodation place in Sofia around 17:00h and you will have the opportunity to walk in Sofia center.

Day 3:

We start our round-trip tour in Bulgaria in the morning with a 3 hour drive to Kazanlak (Valley of Roses and Valley of the Thracian Kings) where we will visit 2 Thracian tombs - Goliama Kosmatka and UNESCO Kazanlak tomb. Currently tourists are allowed to visit a copy of the tomb because the original has a restricted entrance policy, but if you insist on the original you can opt for a visit there and we will book it (extra entrance fee for original) . We will continue our road trip with another 3 hour drive to Nesebar where we will stay overnight.

Day 4:

On this 4th day we will have a walk in the old UNESCO town of Nesebar. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe and the most abundant with medieval architectural monuments in Bulgaria. It inherits an ancient Thracian settlement established 2000 years BC. Nesebar holds nearly 60 houses from the Revival period in Bulgaria (18th-19th century) and more than 40 churches. Adjacent Sunny Beach will fascinate you with its 8 kilometer long fine sand beach and blue water. Our drive today will continue up north via the Sea capital of Bulgaria - Varna, and via Madara Horseman UNESCO monument. Overnight in Ruse.

Day 5:

This 5th day we will dedicate to Ruse Danube region. In the morning we will start with the marvelous Sveshtary King's Tomb from the 3rd century BC in the Sboryanovo Historical and Archaeological Reserve. In this unique area of old villages, necropolis and sanctuaries Sveshtari Tomb has been included in the UNESCO list in 1985 only 3 years after it was discovered. In the afternoon we will drive to Srebarna National Reserve where migrating birds from Europe to Africa (via Pontica) like Pelecanus crispus and Anser erythropus give birth. This reserve has been listed under UNESCO protection in 1965 to help preserve these species. Another interesting attraction is the small floating islands on the lake which never get flooded and thus they become a safe home for nesting birds. After this short ornitological tour of Srebarna lake we return to our hotel in Ruse.

Day 6:

We check out from our hotel in Ruse and go straight to Ivanovo Rock Monasteries and Churches (30 min drive). They are impressive with their layout in the rocks near the river and the frescoes from 13th-14th century which deserved the recognition of UNESCO. Afterwards we head back west to Veliko Turnovo, the Medieval capital of Bulgaria. Most evenings at night there is a unique sound and light show performance over the fortress and if we get lucky, we will sit and watch it. Then we will go for a well deserved relax in our hotel Gurko with a great view over the monument of Assen Dynasty of Kings.

Day 7:

We devotе he this last day to a visit of Bulgarian medieval Kingdom. In the morning after a nice breakfast we start our climb of the Tsarevets hill fortress - the city of Bulgarian Tsars in the 13th and 14th centuries. After that we can have a nice walk around the old Samovodska Street to buy a souvenir and grab some lunch. A short drive will take to Arbanassi village in the afternoon for a visit of the the Nativity of Christ church with its beautiful frescoes from 1632 and one of the oldest preserved iconostasis from wood. The mural paintings include the life of St. John the Baptist, patron of the church, and the wheel of life with the 12 zodiac signs. Then we get seated in our vehicle for our last bit of the road trip in Bulgaria for around 3 hours. Transfer to the airport according to your flight time.
