Sofia Communist Monuments Tour

Sofia overview

Sofia is the contemporary capital of Bulgaria. Its population grew rapidly during the Communist-Socialist era (1944-1989) - by the time of its liberation from the Turks in 1878 the population of the city was 11,649 inhabitants and for a few decades after the liberation the city experienced large population growth mainly from other regions of the country.

During World War II, Sofia was bombed by allied aircrafts in late 1943 and early 1944. As a consequence of the invasion of the Soviet Red Army, Bulgaria's government, which was allied with Germany, was overthrown.

The transformations of Bulgaria into a People's Republic in 1946 and Republic of Bulgaria marked significant changes in the city's appearance. The population of Sofia expanded rapidly due to migration from the country. Whole new residential areas were built in the outskirts of the city, like Druzhba, Mladost and Lyulin.

Your Day In Sofia

Our tour starts with a visit to the former residence of Bugarian Chief of State (President of People's Republic of Bulgaria 1954-1989)  which houses now the National History Museum. From there we will visit "The Bells", a unique of its kind monument created by the daughter of former Chief of State, Ludmila, who gathered there children from over 135 countries in the world. Our third stop in the morning is The Museum of Socialist Art, again a unique of its kind place, where you can see real propaganda sculptures and paintings along with a documentary about life under communist regime in Bulgaria (1944-1989). After some lunch we will have a walk around the remaining and disappeared places of recent communist era. We will finish our tour with a visit of National Museum of Military History. It's open-air exhibition is extremely interesting with its Soviet era aircrafts, tanks, digging machines, helicopters, ballistic missile complexes (this is the only place in the world where you can see such installation!).  Did you know that there is an original piece of the Berlin Wall in Sofia?
