Melnik Wine Tour

Melnik overview

Melnik is declared an architectural reserve and it is one of the most famous wine regions in Bulgaria. The first recorded settlements were the Thracian tribes Medi (the famous Spartacus came from this tribe). The Slavs who came later in these territories, named the settlement Melnik due to the sand formations surrounding it on all sides. Melnik became a part of the First Bulgarian Empire under the rule of Khan Presian (836-852) and prospered significantly during this period. Melnik became the capital of an independent feudal principality ruled by Despot Alexius Slav in 1209 and had an economic and cultural prosperity. The town continued to flourish under Tsar Ivan Assen ІІ because of the duty-free trade with Dubrovnik (ruled by Venetians). In the late 18th century, the town had 1300 houses, seventy churches and a population of some 20,000 people.

Your wine day in Melnik region

Your V travel guide will pick you up from your hotel in Sofia at 8:30 and after a 2h30min drive with various landscape (highway, mountains, river canyon and valleys) you will reach Melnik region. Our first stop will be the town of Melnik. We will visit a historical house, owned by a very rich wine trade family in mid 18th century, who used to export even to Venice. You will enjoy some time in the private cellar of the house. Then you will have a little walk in the smallest town in Bulgaria and the option to visit the Wine museum if time allows. After that we will head to a nearby village - Rojen, where you could have nice lunch and a glass of excellent local wine. We will pay a quick visit to an old monastery, the third most important monastery in Bulgaria. Our final stop will be one of the best wine cellars of Bulgaria - Villa Melnik. You will have a guided tour on site by the owner's family member. After wine tasting their products, you can buy some great wine at special price and we will head back to Sofia.

We recommend Melnik for overnight stay (traditional dances and food) included in some of our Package Tours.
